The S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald's Final voyage and wreck left Lake Superior's westernmost end from, Superior, Wisconsin, at 2:15 p.m. on the afternoon of November 9, 1975.  She joined a second freighter, Arthur M. Anderson, destined for Gary, Indiana, out of Two Harbors, Minnesota.[38] By the next day, the two ships were caught in a severe storm as they both went generally eastward across Lake Superior towards the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.  They passed just south of Caribou Island, Canada and the Edmund Fitzgerald broke apart and sank in 500 feet of water  13 nmi west of Deadman's Cove, Ontario almost exactly on the international border and near Lake Superior's easternmost end.
